“That is very true,” replied Elizabeth, “and I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine.”
Pride and Prejudice was published in 1813, two years after her first novel; thus, the writer was called the “author of Sense and
Sensibility”. Jane Austen’s beloved classic is a captivating tale of love, misunderstanding, and personal growth that continues to
resonate with readers around the globe, across generations.
Elizabeth, the main character, is the eldest daughter of five in the Bennet family. Her independent nature and quick-witted personality
struggle in the English countryside, where every societal expectation dictates every interaction. Her encounter with Mr. Darcy and
family relationships in such a society with restrictions on inheritance gives readers the perfect opportunity to admire Austen’s talent
for conveying human nature and her ability to create relatable characters in this timeless classic.
“It was strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen’s day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only
in relation to the other sex. And how small a part of woman’s life is that.”
— Virginia Woolf
“Jane lies in Winchester—blessed be her shade!
Praise the Lord for making her, and her for all she made!
And while the stones of Winchester, or Milsom Street, remain,
Glory, love and honour unto England’s Jane,”
— Rudyard Kipling
